10 Strategies for a Successful e-Learning Experience
     

At first I struggled to meet the demands of learning online. I first noticed that I was nervous about starting a new way of learning. I also noticed that my motivation and attitude were not effectively tuned to completing the tasks. I realized that my struggle with this transformation centered on effective time management and the fear of the unknown. By incorporating time management skills and learning about the benefits of online learning, I started to feel more confident and willing to give it a try. Now, I have completed more that 5 online courses and have consistently maintained my motivation to complete my course tasks. Online learning is a challenge that requires work on the learner’s part to succeed.

The following are 10 eLearner strategies that will help you succeed in your online educational program and courses.

  1. Time Management
    It is important that every online learner understand the need to arrange a time within their weekly schedule to dedicate to the online courses. For example, a student could set aside every Tuesday for 2 hours in order to participate in one course. It is still important to very important to manage your time and schedule when you will be working on your courses.

  2. Web-savvy
    Students should also be comfortable with various Internet tasks. Those tasks should include navigating the web, emailing, downloading and uploading files, and posting messages to a discussion board. There are several books and/or classes that will help you maximize your Internet skills; furthering your ability to learn in an online environment.

  3. Awareness of Written Tones
    eLearners need to also keep in mind when corresponding with instructors or peers, that tone is invisible. Humor and other human emotions are difficult to express when communicating electronically. It is a good idea for students to construct communication appropriately to avoid misconceptions.

  4. Form a Virtual Study Group
    This is a great one. With online learning, you will not have the regular day to day interaction with teachers and fellow students. Take time during the first week of the course to develop a virtual study group. Send out an email and coordinate a group of about 4 to 5 students that can help edit papers, discuss assignments or homework, and give support. You may even meet new friends.

  5. System Requirements
    A student enrolled in online course also needs to have the appropriate technology. Before beginning a course, students should install appropriate software, Internet browser versions, and multimedia plug-ins. This ensures that the technology will work and provide the best learning experience.

  6. High Motivation
    Motivation is a key ingredient with online learning. It is essential for students to be highly motivated and have a positive attitude when attending online courses. Motivation will increase the eLearner’s success.

  7. Interest in the Subject
    Learning online is a new experience for many people. Be willing to try and accept a new learning style. The benefits and features learning online will spark your interests to timely and effectively be successful in your online course.

  8. Learning Environment
    Students should create an effective learning environment where they plan to study. Put other work away, out of sight, and stay focused. Try to minimize any distractions. Different learning styles will dictate different learning environment practices, but make a space especially for learning.

  9. Take Breaks
    eLearners should also get into the habit of taking short, frequent breaks. To avoid headaches and fatigue, students should periodically get up from their computes and perhaps go for a walk to clear their minds. This will decrease stress and increase learning performance.

  10. Avoid Procrastination
    Students should make an effort to avoid procrastination.
